Role-Specific Categories & Responsibilities

Job Standards:

• Facilitate communication between LEP patients/family members, visitors and providers in all setting throughout the Kish Health System, including conferences, meetings, and/or other Kish Health informational settings.
• Respond promptly to pages and appropriately assess priority of requests.
• Round to patient care areas to evaluate the need for interpretation services.
• Document all interventions in the patient's medical record.
• Serve as a liaison between patients/families and hospital staff to convey patient customer service needs and culture-specific issues/concerns.
• Assist, as able, with appropriate written and sight translations requests, such as discharge instructions.
• Assist, as able, with appropriate department projects and other requests; such as translating, editing, and proofing written material.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Required

Preferred Education (level of education; specific degrees):

High school diploma or equivalent

Bachelor's Degree or some college

Experience (minimum amount of years; type/field):

Prior experience as Medical Interpreter

Prefer 2 plus years of experience as a Medical Interpreter

Credentials Legal Compliance (licenses & certifications):

Oral proficiency Oral proficiency Interview (OPI) or Interpreter Readiness Assessment demonstrating competency in English and target language required to perform interpretation responsibilities at a competent level.

Certificate in Medical Terminology Interpreting Training, Bridging the Gap. (40 hours of Training in Medical Interpreting).

Certificate in Medical Terminology Interpreting Training

Certified Healthcare Interpreter

Certification Commission for Healthcare Interpreters

Skills (technology; machinery; communication):

Verbal and written communication skills in both English and Spanish to talk with a patient, family member, hospital staff and community members.

Basic typing / computer skills required.

Ability to learn and use additional software programs as needed.

Flexibility to travel to all entities of the hospital.

Special Characteristics (travel; significant physical demands and working conditions):

Age specific education

Knowledge of abuse/neglect

Understanding/Knowledge of culture competency

Also, Ability to work in Excel and EPIC.
